Cloud Platform Blog: Google Cloud Storage now provides server-side encryption: "We know that security is important to you and your customers. Our goal is to make securing your data as painless as possible. To help, Google Cloud Storage now automatically encrypts all data before it is written to disk, at no additional charge. There is no setup or configuration required, no need to modify the way you access the service and no visible performance impact. The data is automatically and transparently decrypted when read by an authorized user."

Google to encrypt Cloud Storage data by default | ITworld: "The server-side encryption is now active for all new data written to Cloud Storage, and older data will be encrypted in the coming months, wrote Dave Barth, a Google product manager, in a blog post. "If you require encryption for your data, this functionality frees you from the hassle and risk of managing your own encryption and decryption keys," Barth wrote. "We manage the cryptographic keys on your behalf using the same hardened key management systems that Google uses for our own encrypted data, including strict key access controls and auditing.""

Google BigQuery Adds Data Streaming - Cloud Computing - Software as a: "Google's BigQuery, a Web service for analyzing large amounts of data, is about to become more efficient in order to gain insight into data subsets and to refresh its interface. On Wednesday, Google plans to introduce several new features: support for real-time data streaming in BigQuery, the ability to query portions of a table, the query functions SUM and COUNT, and interface improvements designed to enhance productivity.BigQuery was launched last year as a tool for interactive data analysis. It's not a database, like Google Cloud SQL. Rather it brings MySQL-style querying to a NoSQL datastore."

These applications run on hundreds or thousands of virtual machines, are associated with the addition and subtraction of large amounts of server resources dynamically, and are predicated on opex rather than capex expenditures. This setup lets them scale to much larger user populations, support freemium economic models and respond to highly erratic workloads -- all unsupportable in traditional IT infrastructure settings."

Amazon Outage, Cloud, Dark Lining
Another Amazon Outage Exposes the Cloud's Dark Lining - Businessweek: "It was likely another eventful weekend for the engineers in Amazon’s Web Services division. On Sunday afternoon, a hardware failure at Amazon’s U.S.-East data center in North Virginia led to spiraling problems at a host of well-trafficked online services, including Instagram, Vine, AirBnB and popular mobile magazine app Flipboard.
Amazon blamed the outage on glitches with a single networking device–what it called a “‘grey’ partial failure” that resulted in data loss–and said it was conducting a forensic analysis. The entire incident lasted all of 49 minutes, but like many recent cloud service outages, the resulting questions are likely to last considerably longer. Why are so many prominent Web companies overly dependent on a single cloud provider–and a single data center?"
