Nirvanix cloud service, abrupt shut down

Nirvanix confirms abrupt shut down rumors (but doesn’t apologize for royally screwing customers) | VentureBeat: "Nirvanix . . . an alternative to industry giant Amazon Web Services (AWS), and formed partnerships with lots of notable tech firms like Symantec, IBM, Dell, Ooyala, and many others. . . . The shutdown is likely to send a chill up the spine of anyone using a lesser-known cloud storage provider, and could have larger implications going forward. For instance, companies may be more hesitant to go with a smaller cloud storage service for fear of a repeat of Nirvanix happening — even if that smaller cloud storage service is cheaper and makes more sense to use than the larger, more established services."

NSA, Internet Spying, Offshore Havens, Data Privacy

NSA Internet Spying Sparks Race to Create Offshore Havens for Data Privacy - WSJ.com: "Google Inc., Facebook Inc. and other American technology companies were put on the defensive when Edward Snowden's allegations about U.S.-government surveillance of Internet traffic emerged this spring. Outside the U.S., some companies and politicians saw an opportunity. Three of Germany's largest email providers, including partly state-owned Deutsche Telekom AG, teamed up to offer a new service, Email Made in Germany. The companies promise that by encrypting email through German servers and hewing to the country's strict privacy laws, U.S. authorities won't easily be able to pry inside. More than a hundred thousand Germans have flocked to the service since it was rolled out in August. . . ." (read more at link above)

CloudFlare CEO: ‘Insane’ NSA gag order is costing US tech firms customers

CloudFlare CEO: ‘Insane’ NSA gag order is costing U.S. tech firms customers: "We've now moved beyond mere talk about how the National Security Agency's surveillance programs may hurt U.S. cloud providers, says Matthew Prince, the chief executive of CloudFlare. The companies are already feeling the pain. CloudFlare, a Web site security firm and network provider with clients that run the gamut from WikiLeaks to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, is getting  50 to 100 calls per day from customers demanding more answers about the firm's involvement with the U.S. National Security Agency, Prince says. But that's information the company can't give out, he explains, and the inability to say anything about government requests is seriously hurting his business. "We get calls regularly that say, 'CloudFlare must be working with the NSA,' which we're not," Prince said. "We've gone so far as to litigate requests that did not meet with our processes, but I can't tell you anything beyond that, which is insane.""

Shuttleworth Says Prism Will Drive Cloud to Other Jurisdictions

Shuttleworth: Prism Will Drive Cloud to ‘Other Jurisdictions’ - The CIO Report - WSJ: "Mr. Shuttleworth says that programs like Prism will lead some countries to offer cloud vendors conditions that will make it more attractive for customers to store their data. “Other jurisdictions will emerge… that will provide an environment for your cloud where you can have more clarity about data,” he said. Just as certain countries are seen as better places to register ships, “data is going to become something of which we expect to be mindful of the regulatory environment in which it lives.” According to Mr. Shuttleworth, a growing awareness of data compliance, access and management will lead countries to “become interested in creating national strategies around that… I don’t see it as terribly unhealthy if we see cloud concentrating in certain jurisdictions,” he said. “I think regulatory competition is healthy.”"
