Google Cloud, Autoscaling, Google Compute Engine
From the Google Cloud Platform Blog: Autoscaling, welcome to Google Compute Engine:"The true power of cloud computing is unlocked when developers can build resilient and cost efficient applications that use just the right amount of resources necessary at any given time. So the same team that designed the scaling infrastructure for products like Google Search and Gmail have brought a highly anticipated feature toGoogle Compute Engine - intelligent horizontal Autoscaling. Today we are releasing the service into Beta, which means it is now available for everyone to start using. Autoscaling allows customers to build more cost effective and resilient applications. Using Compute Engine Autoscaling, you can ensure that exactly the right number of Compute Engine instances are available at any given time to handle your application’s workload. This saves you money when your application’s usage is low, and ensures your application is responsive when utilization is high. The Compute Engine Autoscaler is able to intelligently and dynamically scale the number of instances in response to different load conditions by defining the ideal utilization level of a group of Compute Engine instances. This means that when the actual utilization of your service increases or decreases, Autoscaler will detect the change and adjust the number of running instances to match. Autoscaler can respond to a number of different metrics such as CPU load, QPS on a HTTP Load Balancer and metrics defined using the Cloud Monitoring service...." (read more at link above)

Amazon AWS, Massive Scale, Custom Network Gear
A Rare Peek Into The Massive Scale of AWS: "... So nearly five years ago, when this problem became apparent, AWS designed its own network routers and went to original design manufacturers to build the hardware, and put together a team to write the networking software stack on top of them. This is a course of action, Hamilton said laughing, where people “would get you a doctor and put you in a nice little room where you were safe and you can’t hurt anyone.”
The first thing that Amazon learned from its custom network gear is what it learned about servers and storage a long time ago: If you build it yourself with minimalist attitudes and only with the features you need, it is a lot cheaper. “Just the support contract for networking gear was running tens of millions of dollars.”..."

THE Cloud Question: Amazon or Google?
Amazon or Google is The Cloud Question:
Amazon's New Cloud Prices Show That Google Is Now a Threat | WIRED: "... Google introduced a product called Sustained Use Discounts, and this made things much simpler. If you used a lot of computing resources, you’d get a discount: no upfront fees. That’s the model that Amazon took a step toward this week... There are still differences. Amazon had previously demanded upfront payments from customers who wanted to take advantage of its reserved instances pricing. And while those payments are no longer required, customers still have to commit to using Amazon’s services for a year or more. That’s not the case with Google... late last year that Google really delivered a competitive offering, called Compute Engine. And now the company is fast catching up. In late March Google started a price war with Amazon, slashing its cloud computing prices, across the board, by 30 percent. That kind of price slashing is likely to continue, says Michael Crandell, the CEO of RightScale, a cloud management company. “There’s clearly a case of point-counterpoint going on, and it is a competitive market.” Byrne says that while Google doesn’t offer the wide range of products, it beats out Amazon in many respects. Google’s compute speed and network “is faster than Amazon’s,” he says. “They’re probably the only people where you can say that their infrastructure is really world-leading.” (read more at the link above)

Google's Andy Rubin leaves to start incubator - GadgeTell | TechnologyTell: "The head of Google’s robotics division and a co-creator of the Android operating system, Andy Rubin, is leaving Google. Rubin plans to create a startup incubator, so he is leaving his current position at Google and will be replaced by James Kuffner, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal...Google acquired Android in 2005, thereby bringing aboard Rubin. As for Rubin’s replacement, Kuffner has been working with the robotics division at Google for years. Kuffner helped develop the idea for cloud robotics back in 2010, and he has worked as a research scientist in the same Google division for quite a while. Rubin was also involved in robotics when his career really began to takeoff in the 1980s." (read more at link above)

Amazon Aurora, Cost-Effective, MySQL-Compatible Database Engine, for Amazon RDS
Amazon Aurora - New Cost-Effective MySQL-Compatible Database Engine for Amazon RDS: .... Aurora, is a fully-managed, MySQL-compatible, relational database engine that combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases. When you use Amazon RDS for Aurora, you'll spend less time managing and tuning your database, leaving you with more time to focus on building your application and your business. As your business grows, Amazon Aurora will scale with you. You won't need to take your application off line in order to add storage. Instead, Amazon Aurora will add storage in 10 GB increments on as as-needed basis, all the way up to 64 TB. The Cloud Is the New Normal, says Amazon Web Services Exec
New Normal = The Cloud
'The cloud is the new normal,' Amazon Web Services executive says | Computerworld: "... Increasingly, however, AWS is finding that organizations are moving entire data centers, as well as their entire IT operations, to the cloud, Jassy said. An organization may have a lease coming up on a data center or need to do an expensive hardware refresh, and the pending costs or long-term commitment to infrastructure "that is kind of frozen in time," may cause it to more heavily consider the cloud, Jassy said. This is a trend that is accelerating at a very fast rate," he said. AWS' win of a government contract to run the services of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in 2013 caused a lot of other organizations to take notice, Jassy said. "A lot of customers would say if it's secure enough for the CIA, it is probably secure for us too," Jassy said...."

Ken Goldberg: Robots in the Cloud
The Robot in the Cloud: A Conversation With Ken Goldberg
Ken Goldberg has been thinking hard about robots for almost three decades.
His work ranges from over 170 peer-reviewed papers on things like robot algorithms and social information filtering to art projects about the interaction of people and machines. A professor at the University of California, Berkeley, he is establishing a research center to develop medical robots to assist in surgery. That is just the latest development in what he thinks will be one of the great technology breakthroughs of our age: the fusing of robotics and cloud computing. He talks about it in this edited and condensed conversation.
Q. What is cloud robotics?
A. Cloud robotics is a new way of thinking about robots. For a long time, we thought that robots were off by themselves, with their own processing power. When we connect them to the cloud, the learning from one robot can be processed remotely and mixed with information from other robots.
.... The term “cloud robotics” was coined in 2010 by James Kuffner, who was at Carnegie Mellon and then went to Google. I had been doing robot control over the Internet since the mid-90s, with a garden people could connect to, then plant seeds or water their plants. The cloud is different from my Internet “telegarden,” though. The cloud can have all the computation and memory stored remotely. That means all of the endpoints can be lightweight, and there is a huge collective benefit. These robots can address billions of behaviors and learn how to do important things quickly....(read more at link above)

Google Cloud, Container Engine, Kubernetes
Google Builds New ‘Freeways’ to Its Data Centers for Cloud Push - Digits - WSJ: ".... Google built one of the world’s most powerful networks of data centers, but fell behind Amazon and Microsoft in the business of renting this remote computing horsepower to other companies.
Google executives said they’re now an option for companies considering running projects in the cloud, something they couldn’t have said 18 months ago.
Executives said they are less interested in projects that shift existing applications from a company’s own data center to the cloud, and more interested in persuading companies to create new applications in the cloud.
“Are we winning in yesterday’s workloads? Probably not. But that will be how the minority of workloads are managed in the cloud in the future,” said Brian Stevens, vice president of cloud platforms at Google.
Google is hoping to leapfrog Amazon by pushing its own approach to cloud computing, known as containers. The technology is considered faster and more efficient than more standard cloud computing technology known as virtual machines, experts say.
In June, Google released an open-source version of the technology, called Kubernetes, to encourage adoption.... the company unveiled Container Engine, a service that Google said will automate much of the work involved in running applications using this technology."

Cloud Computing, Coming of Age
Coming of Age in Cloud Computing - NYTimes.com: "... Microsoft, which operates one of the biggest so-called “public clouds,” or large and flexible computing systems available for remote rental, announced several changes to its data storage and processing services that will make them more powerful. Microsoft also announced a partnership with Dell to sell a kind of “cloud in a box,” or hardware and software that created a mini-version of Microsoft’s cloud, called Azure, inside a company. The idea is that a company could work with its own version of Azure, then easily move up to the giant version Microsoft has to handle big workloads. Hewlett-Packard may be after something similar with its effort to create a private-public cloud business based on the HP cloud, which uses a kind of open source software. What all of this means is that cloud computing, which makes it easier to tie more things to computers and more easily manage software, is starting to appear in even more forms and types...." Can IBM Compete In Cloud Computing
Doubtful--
IBM's Big Stumble - Businessweek: "... Rometty’s nearly impossible task of reinventing IBM for the era of cloud computing while handcuffed by the “Roadmap.” IBM is 103 years old and has survived upheavals in the technology industry before—selling mainframes, then personal computers, then getting into the consulting game. Rometty will tell anyone who listens that the changes demanded of IBM today are as great as they’ve ever been. One question is whether IBM has the technical chops to compete with Amazon and others: After losing a lucrative CIA cloud project to the upstart, IBM had to acquire a small competitor, SoftLayer, to competently provide the services its customers are now demanding. The arrival of cheap cloud computing means that corporations don’t need IBM’s big, expensive mainframes. And even if IBM does catch up, the cloud might be such a thin-margined industry that it can’t sustain the profit margins IBM had been telling investors to expect. Until today...."

Microsoft Azure Cloud, Internet of Things, IoT Services
Satya Nadella Pitches Microsoft ‘Difference’ to CIOs - The CIO Report - WSJ: "... Microsoft also has a valuable asset in supporting its Office 365 cloud productivity suite with the Azure infrastructure services, ensuring security and reliability. “Microsoft’s differentiation is the total package,” he said.
A crucial extension of Microsoft’s strategy is the Internet of Things, in which everyday devices include sensors for remote control or automation. Mr. Nadella said that ThyssenKrupp Elevator uses sensors and IoT services, hosted in Microsoft’s Azure cloud, to monitor one million elevators worldwide to notify technicians when they require maintenance. IoT is strategic for Microsoft. “We are well into it,” he said...."

Rackspace, Amazon, Patch, Reboot Cloud Servers
Rackspace Joined Amazon in Patching, Rebooting Cloud Servers: "... The issue was further complicated by a tight deadline—the vulnerability was first discovered early last week, and a patch wasn't worked out with Xen engineers until late Sept. 26. At the same time, technical details of the vulnerability were scheduled to be released Oct. 1, giving Rackspace, Amazon Web Services (ASW) and any other cloud provider facing the same issues only a few days to patch the systems and reboot them. They also had to alert customers to the situation, but not give out too much information that hackers could use to compromise data on the servers before they were patched. - See more at: http://www.eweek.com/cloud/rackspace-joined-amazon-in-patching-rebooting-cloud-servers.html#sthash.Vhweg9M4.dpuf"

Cloud, Robots, Automation
Cloud Robotics and Automation: "What if robots and automation systems were not limited by onboard computation, memory, or programming? This is now conceivable with wireless networking and rapidly expanding Internet resources. In 2010, James Kuffner at Google introduced the term "Cloud Robotics" to describe a new approach to robotics that takes advantage of the Internet as a resource for massively parallel computation and sharing of vast data resources. The Google autonomous driving project exemplifies this approach: the system indexes maps and images that are collected and updated by satellite, Streetview, and crowdsourcing to facilitate accurate localization. Another example is Kiva Systems new approach to warehouse automation and logistics using large numbers of mobile platforms to move pallets using a local network to coordinate planforms and update tracking data. These are just two new projects that build on resources from the Cloud..." (read more at link above)

In addition they are incorporating Kubernetes into Mesos to manage the deployment of Docker workloads. Using the app, developers can spin up a Mesosphere cluster on GCP in a few clicks – the app installs and configures everything required to run the cluster. There is no charge for using the app, beyond the service fees for the Google Cloud Platform resources used. Customers can schedule Docker containers side by side on the same Mesosphere cluster as other Linux workloads such as data analytics tasks like Spark and Hadoop and more traditional tasks like shell scripts and jar files...."

Digital Realty, Cloud Providers
Digital Realty Has A Powerful Moat Of Dividend Repeatability - Digital Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE:DLR) | Seeking Alpha: ".... Modern cloud providers cater to small and medium-sized businesses, but they all aspire to penetrate the enterprise marketplace. The enterprise segment is our bread-and-butter customer base. They already populate our data centers around the world. Our recent leasing activity has been heavily skewed to cloud service providers, in part because they want access to our enterprise customer base.
Enterprise customers in turn are attracted by the ability to easily and securely connect to multiple areas of their hybrid cloud. Both sets of customers choose to grow on our platform, in part because of the presence of the other. The final catalyst connecting our incredible enterprise customer base to the cloud service providers they now need to grow is the deployment of our global network ecosystem.
This mutual attraction and our interconnected global portfolio essentially act as a wide moat that is extremely difficult for competitors to replicate...." (read more at link above)

Storm Clouds Over Amazon AWS?
Storm Clouds Over Amazon Business - WSJ: "Amazon.com Inc. has been fighting two big rivals in the world of cloud computing. But that battle shows signs of becoming a free-for-all that threatens its profitability goals for the business.
Large telecom and small startups have been forging into or expanding services that let companies rent computing cycles rather than operate their own servers and data centers. The broader competition comes amid a continuing price war in the business among Amazon, Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Those pressures were underscored... when the online retailer reported a wider loss for its second quarter. Part of the reason: its Amazon Web Services, or AWS, recently cut prices by between 28% and 51% for various services as gains at AWS and similar businesses slowed to 38% from 60% in its first quarter." Amazon, Google, Cloud price war
Amazon’s cloud price war with Google is starting to hurt - Quartz: "... Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s cloud-computing business, is now mature enough to affect Amazon’s overall numbers. Amazon made a big price cut in late March to counter aggressive pricing from Google, with service price declines up to 65%. Customers loved it, with usage increasing 90% year-over-year, Amazon said today on its earnings call. But revenue growth took a hit as a result.
+
Amazon doesn’t break out AWS revenue specifically, but it’s the largest part of Amazon’s “North America – Other” segment, where growth fell to 38% year-over-year after consistent percentage growth rates in the 50s and 60s over the past two years...."

Amazon Cloud, Fast Growth Business
Amazon's Cloud Is One of the Fastest-Growing Software Businesses in History - Businessweek: "Five billion dollars. That’s how much Amazon.com will rake in from its cloud computing business this year, according to a new estimate from Pacific Crest Securities. If true, it’s an incredible figure. It would mean that Amazon’s cloud revenue shot up 58 percent in a single year, from $3.1 billion in 2013. In a research note, Pacific Crest says it expects the business to keep growing at a clip, with revenue hitting $6.7 billion in 2015. (Amazon does not break out its cloud revenue figures.) The growth of Amazon’s cloud business is unprecedented, at least when compared to other business software ventures. It’s grown faster after hitting the $1 billion revenue mark than Microsoft, Oracle, and Salesforce.com. You would need to turn to Google —which had the advantage of the vast consumer market—to find a business that grew faster....

Why Big Companies Delay Using the Cloud
Why Big Companies Delay Using the Cloud for Some Applications - WSJ: "But many of those software vendors' biggest customers are in no rush to make the switch, particularly when it comes to the applications that manage key parts of their businesses.
There is no doubt that cloud software is gaining ground among corporate users of all sizes. Revenue for Oracle's cloud businesses in the quarter ended May 31 totaled $450 million, up about 22% from a year earlier, although it remains a relatively small portion of the company's overall revenue.
While many larger companies have turned to cloud software to manage systems like human-resources management, they are slower to adopt the cloud for applications that handle inventory management, billing and other processes they rely on to run their businesses on a daily basis." US Court Ruling, US Cloud Providers, Privacy
Microsoft ordered to produce overseas customer email addresses by US judge | Technology | theguardian.com: "Microsoft Corp must turn over a customer’s emails stored in a data center in Ireland to the US government, a US judge ruled on Thursday in a case that has drawn concern from privacy groups and major technology companies. Microsoft and other US companies had challenged a criminal search warrant for the emails, arguing federal prosecutors cannot seize customer information held in foreign countries. But following a two-hour court hearing in New York, US District Judge Loretta Preska said the warrant lawfully required the company to hand over any data it controlled, regardless of where it was stored. “It is a question of control, not a question of the location of that information,” Preska said...."
